In a ground breaking move towards sustainability and innovation, Westwood Clinic is on the path to becoming Malaysia’s first ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) clinic, a recognition bestowed upon them by the Sustainable Infrastructure Development Council (SIDEC). This achievement is not merely a title but a testament to the clinic’s dedication to revolutionising healthcare practices with a focus on environmental responsibility, employee well-being, and technological advancements.
One of Westwood Clinic’s managing directors, Dr Jest Wong’s notable initiatives is his contribution to a global reference textbook on nanotechnology and environmentally friendly cosmetic products. This collaborative effort with the renowned University Malaya, a leading public tertiary education institution in Malaysia, aims to set new standards in the healthcare industry. The integration of green-friendly practices, such as the use of environmentally friendly paint during renovations and rainwater harvesting for toilet usage, has allowed the clinic to significantly reduce its environmental footprint. The adoption of low-energy consumption machines has led to an impressive 8-fold reduction compared to conventional equipment.
On the global front, Dr Jest Wong is working with biotech companies in China and Taiwan to bring environmentally sustainable goods, not to mention developing apps and compound medicine with universities in Malaysia, Thailand and Taiwan, a boost for Westwood Clinic’s reputation.
Ensuring the well-being of its employees is a top priority for Westwood Clinic. The clinic conducts monthly health checks that encompass both physical and mental aspects. This commitment to employee safety reflects the clinic’s understanding of the importance of a healthy and motivated workforce.
In a move that sets Westwood Clinic apart from its peers, the clinic has seamlessly integrated artificial intelligence (AI) into its operations. This not only minimises the risk of human errors but also aligns with the global shift towards paperless practices. The incorporation of AI technology showcases the clinic’s commitment to staying at the forefront of healthcare innovation.
Westwood Clinic’s unwavering dedication to the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is truly commendable. The clinic has achieved milestones in SDGs 3 (Good Health and Well-being), 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure), 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), and 17 (Partnerships for the Goals). By successfully hitting and implementing these goals, Westwood Clinic is paving the way for the future of healthcare in Malaysia.
Dr Jest Wong said “As the first ESG clinic in Malaysia, Westwood Clinic is not just a healthcare provider; it is a beacon of sustainability, innovation, and social responsibility”. “The clinic’s holistic approach towards healthcare is a shining example for others in the industry to follow, proving that excellence in healthcare can go hand in hand with environmental stewardship and social well-being”, he added.
Dr Jest Wong hopes that this initiative can influence other industry players to follow suit and contribute in making Malaysia a more sustainable country.
