8 Ways to a More Relaxed Mind, Naturally
We all wish to live a gratifying life filled with peace and calmness, yet, due to hectic lifestyles and fast-paced living, many among us find ourselves in a constant state of anxiety and restlessness. Many of us are also making do with too little sleep, which is detrimental to our health in the long run. Instead of resorting to prescription remedies such as sleeping pills, for example, did you know that there are more natural and healthier ways to relax our mind? Here are 8 ways to do just that, and achieve the calmness we’ve always wanted!
1. Do some deep breathing
Deep breathing can be done anywhere, and in any position. Start by relaxing the stomach, and place one hand below the ribs. Breathe in slowly and deeply through the nose, feeling the hand rise. Breathe out through the mouth, allowing the hand to fall. Repeat till you feel calmer.1
2. Have a good soapy soak
Nothing comes close to the weightless feeling of submerging one’s body in warm water. So, draw yourself a nice, warm bath and have a good soak, preferably in scented suds – think lavender, geranium, or sandalwood for blissful relaxation.
3. Go for a stroll
Isn’t it great to know that you can walk almost anywhere without using any equipment or needing any gym membership? Walking boosts our emotional wellbeing and calms the mind.2
Tip: Always wear comfortable footwear to reap the intended benefits of walking.
4. Lower your head
Positioning your head lower than your heart delivers a restorative effect on the autonomic nervous system (ANS), lessening your reactivity to the fight-or-flight response. Do this by placing your head between your knees, or stand and hang your head and arms toward your toes.
5. Tense and release (your muscles)
Tighten a part of your body, for example, your fist, hold for a few seconds, and then release. Pick another part of your body and do the same. For each area, constrict and release one to two times. This exercise will make us aware of the stress we are holding in our bodies.
6. Eat a nutritious diet
Include foods such as avocados, almonds, oranges, spinach, oatmeal, and fatty fish, which are all stress-busting foods which will help to keep you calm and relaxed while nourishing your body with their list of beneficial nutrients.
7. Laugh out loud!
This may sound counter intuitive to some, but having a good belly laugh is one of the best ways to achieve a relaxed, calmer mind. So, go ahead and watch your favourite stand-up comedian in action, and laugh out loud!
8. Take a good herbal supplement
Certain types of herbal supplements, such as ashwagandha,3 saffron, lavender, passion flower, etc, can help to ease and calm your mind, paving the way for relaxation and more restful sleep. Always ensure that the supplements you choose are of good quality and from a reputable brand.
