What is Bowen Therapy?
Bowen Therapy is a gentle, non-manipulative hands-on treatment, which involves very specific but gentle moves over the body’s fascia (soft connective tissue), muscles, tendons and ligaments. Between these moves there are short, but very essential pauses, which allow the fascia to respond.
Disturbing the fascia, the moves trigger messages within the body’s Central Nervous System (CNS) and in effect remind the body to address any imbalances in chemical composition, body misalignment or other issues that could be causing internal pain or ailments. Sounds impossible? Ask anyone who has enjoyed Bowen Therapy and they will tell you that it’s not, with many after only one treatment experiencing immediate reduction or relief from pain.
Practiced worldwide, My Bowen Therapy™ is excited to bring Bowen Therapy to Malaysia and spread the word of this, one of the world’s fastest growing modalities, which has literally changed the lives of many. The remarkable record of success worldwide treating an outstanding number of conditions is phenomenal and now it is available here in Malaysia!
How it got started
Born in Australia on April 18, 1916, Tom Ambrose Bowen, the man behind the discovery of what is now acclaimed as the most exciting healing modality in the world, began treating people from the front room of a friend’s house in Geelong, Australia, approximately 60km away from Melbourne.
Although having had no formal training in bodywork, word of Tom’s “healing hands” started to spread, and many would wait patiently outside his clinic waiting for their number to be called. During 1975, an investigation by the Webb Committee of Inquiry into Chiropractic, Osteopath and Naturopathy in Australia, found that Tom was treating 13,000 people per year of all ages and a wide variety of symptoms.
Tom Bowen never held any teaching classes or workshops for others to learn his techniques, however he did invite 6 “Bowen Watchers” to observe long term what he was practicing, and it is from these 6 watchers that the Bowen technique has been passed on since the passing of Tom in 1982.
Ossie Rentsh, residing in Hamilton, Australia was one of these watchers, and after carefully documenting Tom’s work, developed a method, along with his wife Elaine, which would allow others to be able to learn the amazing modality of the Bowen Technique through their training school, Bowtech®.
Fast-forward to 2016 and you will find 10’s of thousands of Bowen Therapists worldwide, all helping people get back to health the natural way. Insurance companies, including big names the like BUPA, recognise Bowen Therapy, and Bowen Therapy is also registered under The NHS Directory of Complementary and Alternative Practitioners.
Celebrities have started endorsing Bowen including the likes of Bear Grylls and Elle McPherson, Kyle Minogue along with professional athletes, including members of Team GB talking highly of the positive effects the therapy allows them to enjoy.
The word of Bowen is starting to spread with more and more, around the world, learning of the technique daily. March 2016 saw Malaysia hold its first training course in the technique, with 14 new therapists being certified in January 2017.

Why one should start on Bowen?
Worldwide Bowen has saved many from surgery and should always be considered as a first option rather than surgery, which should always be the last. Research is showing that our fascia may be causing 80% of our aches and pains, therefore it would be prudent to check that this was not the case, before embarking on invasive procedures that could have otherwise been avoided. Bowen involves no medication and the only tools that are used during your treatment, are your therapists hands. The technique is very gentle, with the majority of those who receive Bowen slipping into such a relaxed state that they fall asleep.
Therapists are versatile, and are trained to treat pregnant woman whilst they are seated, along with those who are wheelchair bound, making it a viable therapeutic option for the infirmed and elderly. Due to the effectiveness of the technique, your therapist will know how quick to expect results, and will not have you return week after week, for months at a time, nor tie you into expensive packages for a set number of treatments. Every case is taken on its own individual basis. However most find a huge reduction in their symptoms, if not total dispersion, within 3 sessions of Bowen, 5-10 days apart. Taking in all these considerations, Bowen is a very cost effective option for those seeking assistance for pain management and general health.
How Bowen is different from other therapies?
Unlike other commonly known therapies used for pain management, Bowen is a holistic therapy and as such your therapist sees your body as a whole. Your treatment will be planned around all symptoms you are experiencing and not just the initial reason that you may have made your appointment for. Many may think that they may be suffering from a number of conditions, however, once they start receiving Bowen discover that often these symptoms are linked.
For example, you may initially seek help in alleviating back pain, only to find that the therapy has also had a positive effect with arthritic pain, digestive issues, headaches and other symptoms normally not associated as being related. With all this in mind, you may have found that you make an appointment to assist with pains in the soles of your feet, and find your therapist also treating your pelvis and your jaw.
Typically a treatment lasts between 40-60 minutes, depending on the condition the individual presents with, and it can be performed through light clothing as long as it is loose fitting and thin enough to allow your therapist to feel the relevant muscles, tendons and ligaments.
How it works?
Take a moment to think what happens when you cut your finger or break a bone, your body has the ability to repair that lesion or break, and likewise your body has the ability to fight infection and repair internal damaged tissues.
The technique encourages the body to address conditions, encouraging the relaxation of any areas of tension/pulls within the body’s fascia network. Fascia is being shown to be the single most pain-sensitive tissue in the body and is in effect the ‘fabric’ that is woven throughout every part of our bodies, hold us together and in effect our wrapping. It is due to this that a Bowen Therapy treatment addresses the body as a whole and not just the specific area of problem. For example, lower back pain may be originating from tight fascia in the leg or vice versa.
Fascia is the membrane, or tissue if you like, that you will have seen if you have ever cut meat, or even removed the skin from raw chicken. Our fascia network surrounds, everything inside us, and in effect attaches everything to everything. It is wrapped around every organ, every ligament, every, every bone, and even every cell.
Traumas, poor posture, stress, injury, prolonged sitting, standing and dehydration etc. can all affect the body’s fascia, making it in effect sluggish and tight, which can cause anything from discomfort to emotional issues.
During your Bowen Treatment your practitioner will work on specific areas of your body specific to their findings during assessment, encouraging these areas to go back to their original state. The gentle, rolling action that is performed over very specific areas of the body, stimulate the flow of water and kick start other automatic neural responses within the soft connective tissue which webs throughout the body. These responses often result in immediate reduction in pain along with long-term effects.
